The incident began around 5:30 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 20, when the Chappaqua Fire Department responded to a single-vehicle crash on Quaker Road, where a car had veered off the road and landed on its side.

Firefighters removed the windshield to help the driver safely get out of the vehicle. Medics checked his vitals, but he declined a trip to a hospital.

While firefighters directed traffic and provided lighting for the tow truck driver working to remove the wrecked car, the driver suddenly collapsed and became unresponsive.

Firefighters immediately began CPR and used an AED to revive him while EMS rushed back to the scene. A pulse was restored before he was taken to the hospital, firefighters said.

The department said all of its members are prepared for such situations and are required to be certified in CPR and first aid.
